Editorial standards
Last updated: October 25, 2026
The Claimfrog blog helps homeowners, renters, small businesses and rental hosts document what they own and get insurance claims paid. Insurance decisions affect people's money and homes, so every guide we publish follows the standards on this page.
Who writes our guides
Guides are published by the Claimfrog Team, the people who build Claimfrog, a home inventory app for insurance claims based in Montreal, Canada. We write for readers in the United States and Canada and name the state or province whenever a rule, deadline or requirement depends on where you live.
How a guide is made
- Research. Each guide starts from the questions people actually ask and from primary sources.
- Drafting. Drafts are researched and written with the help of AI tools, working from written rules on accuracy, sourcing and tone.
- Automated checks. Before review, software checks that every source link works and that each quoted passage really appears on the page it cites, and flags unsupported claims about coverage or prices.
- Independent review. A separate review pass, which did not write the draft, checks every claim against its source, the dates of every statistic, and the insurance accuracy of the whole piece.
- Approval. A person at Claimfrog reads and approves every guide before it is published.
Sources we rely on
We prefer primary and official sources: state and provincial insurance regulators, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program, the IRS, the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, the Insurance Information Institute, and consumer groups such as United Policyholders. Every statistic is linked to the page it comes from and keeps the year it describes. We do not repeat numbers we can only find second-hand, and we never invent examples, quotes or experiences.
Each guide lists its sources at the end so you can check them yourself.
What our guides are not
Our guides are general information, not insurance, legal, tax or financial advice. Policies and laws differ, so we never tell you what your own policy covers. Check your policy wording and ask your insurer, agent or broker before you make a decision.
Mentions of Claimfrog
We make Claimfrog, and some guides mention how the app can help with the task at hand. Those mentions describe only features the app actually has. We do not accept payment for coverage, links or product placement, and no insurer or other company reviews our guides before publication.
Images
Cover images are illustrations made for the article or licensed stock photos. They are there to illustrate the topic, do not show the people or properties described in the guide, and are not evidence of anything in it.
Updates and corrections
We review guides when rules, deadlines or data change. When we update a guide, the new date appears under its title. If you spot an error, email [email protected] with the page and what is wrong. We check every report and correct confirmed errors promptly.
