Add an item with a photo
Take or upload a photo and let AI fill in the name, brand, model and category, then save the item with a value.
Adding items one at a time is the most accurate way to document your most valuable things. Start with a photo: it is your proof of ownership, and AI uses it to fill in the details for you.
Steps
- Open Items and click Add Item.
- Under Photos, click Take photo (on a phone) or Upload (or drop photos onto the box). Add a few angles, plus a close-up of the serial-number label if there is one.
- Click Detect. AI identifies the item in your newest photo and fills in its name, brand, model and category. Fields filled by AI show an AI badge: check them before saving.
- Choose the Room and check the Category.
- Enter a Replacement Value (what it would cost to buy new today). On Premium you can click Value to get an AI estimate from real retailer listings. See Estimate replacement value.
- Open More details to add the purchase price, date and place, serial number, receipt, tags or a description.
- Click Save, or Save & add another to keep the same room and category for the next item.
Only the name, category and a value (replacement value or purchase price) are required. Photos and receipts are what make an item claim-ready.
The completeness meter
As you fill in the form, a meter shows how claim-ready the item is and what to add next: a photo, a value, a receipt, then the serial number. When it's full, the item has everything an adjuster typically asks for.
Good to know
- Detect automatically. Turn on Detect automatically when I add a photo to skip clicking Detect each time.
- Several things in one photo? On Free, pick the one item you want to add. To add every item in a room at once, use room capture on Premium.
- Duplicates. If a similar item already exists in that room, Claimfrog asks whether to Increment Quantity on the existing item or Add as New Item. If you added new photos or a receipt, choose Add as New Item to keep them.
- Adding several plain items? If you paste a list into the name field, Claimfrog offers to switch to Add a list.
- Shared property? You need the Editor role to add items. Viewers see a View only badge.
Troubleshooting
- "The AI could not identify anything in this photo." Try a closer, well-lit shot of one item, or type the details yourself.
- iPhone (HEIC) photos. Some browsers can't preview or analyze HEIC photos. They are still saved as originals. For AI detection, take the photo in the app, or set your iPhone to Camera › Formats › Most Compatible.
- "File is larger than 10 MB." Photos must be under 10 MB each.
