Import a spreadsheet (CSV)
Bring an existing inventory from Excel, Google Sheets or another app into Claimfrog in three steps, and undo it if something looks wrong.
Already have an inventory in a spreadsheet, or the template your insurer gave you? Import it instead of retyping it.
Before you start
Claimfrog imports CSV files. In Excel choose File › Save As › CSV. In Google Sheets choose File › Download › Comma-separated values (.csv).
Not sure how to lay out your file? Click Download a template in the import window and copy your data into it.
Steps
- Open Items. Click the arrow next to Add Item and choose Import a spreadsheet.
- Upload: click Choose File and pick your CSV. The first row must contain column headers.
- Map fields: each column in your file is matched to a Claimfrog field (Item Name, Category, Room, Replacement Value, Quantity, Brand, Model, Serial Number, UPC, Purchase Price, Date of Purchase, Place of Purchase, Description, Tags).
- Columns marked Matched were recognized by their header.
- Columns marked AI suggestion were matched by AI. Check them.
- Choose a field for any column you want to keep, or leave it as Not imported.
- One column must be mapped to Item Name.
- Review: check the preview. Rows with problems are flagged; rows without a name are skipped, and any other bad value (an invalid date or price) is left blank.
- Tick Skip rows that are already in your inventory to avoid duplicates.
- If your file has rooms or categories you don't have yet, choose whether to add them to your lists.
- Click Confirm & Import.
Undo an import
Changed your mind? Click Undo import on the confirmation to remove every item that import added.
Good to know
- Headers in English, French and Spanish are recognized automatically. A file exported from Claimfrog imports back with no AI needed.
- Dates like 03/04/2024 are ambiguous. The review step shows Dates read as with the format it picked. Click Change if it's wrong.
- European number formats (1.234,56) and files saved by older versions of Excel are handled.
- Very large files can be slow. Consider splitting a file with thousands of rows into a few smaller ones.
Troubleshooting
- "The file needs a header row and at least one item row." Make sure row 1 holds the column names and your data starts on row 2.
- "Automatic column matching is unavailable right now." Choose a field for each column yourself; the import still works.
